5 Myths About Metal Roofing in Baton Rouge

Robbie Chatelain • August 5, 2013

You may have considered a metal roof for your home at one time or another. If so, you probably thought about at least one of these five common metal roof stereotypes. Well let’s address those concerns and discover what’s true and what’s false.

1. No Resale Value: Quite the opposite is true here. A quality metal roof will add to the value of your home. It’s not uncommon for a metal roof to fetch more than half of the initial cost at selling time. Considering a homeowner’s penchant for keeping maintenance at a minimum, a home with a roof that will never need to be replaced will be very appealing.

2. Louisiana Thunderstorms are going to be noisy: The only way pounding rain drops will make a racket is if you have sheets of metal over open rafters. This makes the metal reverberate. However, today’s methods have the metal shingles and material fastened directly to the existing wooden roof deck. This keeps the roof quiet.

3. It Will Make My Home Warmer: Again, the opposite is typically more accurate. A metal roof can significantly reduce the temperature of your home. Aluminum roofs are the most energy efficient. They can reduce the amount of heat entering your home by up to 34%. Metal roofs are ideal for keeping your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

4. Lightning Strikes: Metal does conduct electricity, however, it does not attract it. In fact metal is not a combustible material so, in a thunderstorm, it can be safer than a wooden roof.

5. It Can’t Be Walked On: This could be an issue for a number of reasons; home maintenance, chimney maintenance, tree trimming, etc. However, when done correctly, you can access your metal roof without damaging it just as you would a traditional wooden roof. Consult the manufacturer and/or installer for the proper protocol.

With these common concerns put to bed, and perhaps some new benefits unveiled, the value and superiority of metal roofs is evident. At Cribb’s Incorporated we have been the Baton Rouge area’s source for residential and commercial roofing and sheet metal needs for over 50 years .
