What Should I Do About the Leak in My Roof?

There are few things that create a restful night’s sleep like the sound of pouring rain. Hearing the raindrops pelt against your roof and windows may help you settle in for the evening and dream of that beach vacation waiting for you this summer, but when the illusion of wading through ankle deep crystal clear water is replaced with treading across soggy carpet, that dream can become a nightmare.

In Baton Rouge we are used to soggy runs of weather and the perils of our tropical climate, especially as we approach spring. This is the time of the year when we really appreciate a sound, solid roof. If you have any concerns, this is also the time of the year to address them, before the stronger storms and potential hurricanes of summer roll in. Here are a few tips for finding and fixing leaks in your roof.

  • Look along your ceilings and walls: Finding water marks and stains on the higher parts of walls and across your ceilings can be a certain indication of a roof leak.
  • Look for penetrations on the roof: These are definite signs of where water is infiltrating the roof.
  • Check common areas: Roof vents and flashing can be typical problem spots for water on roofs.
  • Determine the severity of the solution: Many small leaks can be remedied by some caulk or the renailing of flashing or shingles. However these could be symptoms of a bigger problem. It is always a good idea, especially for homes that don’t have a simple or safe access to the roof, to consult a trusted, licensed and bonded roofing company.

It is crucial to locate and fix these leaks as soon as possible. Even if you are planning on a major roof repair or replacement in the near future, letting a leak linger can cause significant damage in terms of mold, rotting, ruined insulation, sheetrock and framing. If you choose not to make the repair yourself, call a trusted, local roofing contractor. Cribbs Incorporated has been fixing leaks and roofs for over 50 years.
