Spring Cleaning Your Roof: Points to Remember

Robbie Chatelain • April 18, 2023

The cold weather is appearing less and less. The sun is staying out a little later in the evening. That means that spring is quickly approaching. After a season of cooler temperatures, trees dropping leaves, and the occasional storm, this is a great time of the year to give your roof a little extra attention. Here are a few spring -cleaning tips to make sure roof is healthy.

Check the Tree Limbs Around Your Home

While many trees are still bare it’s easy to see if any limbs have been damaged or are growing too close to your roof. Falling limbs, or limbs that come in contact with the roof can damage shingles and reduce the life of a tile roof significantly. This is a good time of the year to remove these branches to prevent problems as the tropical season gets closer.

Keep an Eye Out for Moss and Mold

After a period of wet weather with reduced sunlight, it’s not uncommon for moss and mold to appear. Look for areas of discolored streaks. Moss and mold can damage the material of your roof and also make your home less energy efficient. If you notice this discoloration you should apply a treatment of chlorine bleach or copper sulfate. Never pressure wash your roof, this can remove granules and cause premature shingle failure.

Inspect Your Gutters for Damage

The gutters on your roof have an important job. Channeling water off of the roof and away from your home. If your gutters have been damaged or become clogged, they won’t be able to effectively perform.

Look for Missing or Damaged Shingles and Flashing

If you notice any missing or damaged shingles, tiles, or flashing , you’ll want to address this quickly. Damaged shingles should be replaced to prevent leaks or further problems that can compromise the lifespan of your roof.

Remove Leaves and Other Debris

As leaves fell during the autumn months, some may have collected on your roof. These accumulations of leaves and other debris can hold moisture and cause mold and mildew problems. They can also block your gutters and add extra weight to your roof . If you notice leaves and other debris on your roof, they should be carefully removed.
