How to Prepare Your Roof for Hurricane Season

Robbie Chatelain • Jul 19, 2018

While most of the nation prepares for the summer by getting out the grill and tidying up the patio for fun in the sun, along the Gulf Coast, summertime also poses the threat of hurricanes and tropical storm systems. As the waters in the Gulf of Mexico get warmer throughout June and into early fall, the possibility of hurricanes becomes more real, and all homeowners can do is prepare for the worst while hoping for the best.

One of the most important steps to take in hurricane preparedness is to ensure that your roof is fully prepared to withstand a major storm system. Depending on the age, materials, and current shape of your roof, it may be time to update or to just give it some TLC. After all, having a sound and sturdy roof overhead is key to not only the safety of your home, but that of yourself and your family as well.

What You Can Do to Prepare Your Roof for Hurricane Season

The first step you should take to prepare your roof for hurricane season is to conduct a visual inspection of its current state. Look for missing, warped, damaged, or old shingles. This will help you determine if there are any imperfections that may compromise the structure of your roof in the event of a hurricane. While you’re there, take note of your gutters as well. Gutters that are damaged or clogged with debris cannot drain properly, and will allow water from heavy rains to pool.

Additionally, it is advisable to contact your home insurance company now and discuss the policies regarding your roof. In the event of severe weather causing damage to your roof, it is good to know that you are covered for the worst case scenario.

Preparations a Roofing Contractor Can Take to Protect Your Roof

If anything seems out of the ordinary, it is best to call a roofing contractor as soon as possible. A contractor can perform a routine inspection to determine how strong your roof is and if it is storm ready or not. In some cases, construction and updates may be needed. Newer shingles or metal roofs can withstand winds upwards of 100 mph, while some older shingles can only handle gusts that are about 50-60 mph. Metal straps are also how many Gulf Coast residents are protecting their home. Their roofs are fastened to the structure of their homes by connecting the roof to the walls.

Depending on the state of your roof, you may be advised to have it completely replaced. If your roof is old and showing signs of rot or damage, then replacement may be the only solution. Although this could be pricey, a roof collapsing during a storm will not only mean a roof replacement, but everything inside of the house will likely be ruined as well. With a new roof, you are also likely to have a warranty which will cover you in the event of storm damage.
