Denham Springs Roofing: How to Identify Storm Damage

Robbie Chatelain • May 28, 2015

At this time of the year, it can be difficult to remember the last day we didn’t have a thunderstorm or at least a round of rain at some point during the day. As we get closer to summer and into the tropical season, the rain and wind will only likely increase. These storms while they definitely put a damper on your outdoor plans, can also take a serious toll on your roof. Between the wind, hail, tree branches, debris, and rain, shingles can be torn from the roof and other elements of your home can take quite a beating. Here are some easy tips for identifying storm damage on your roof.

  • Check your attic: As your attic serves as the final barrier between your roof and the rest of your home, this is an ideal place to start your inspection. While in the attic you are looking for any signs of water damage or any leaks. If there is significant damage you may notice water marks or stains on ceilings and walls around your home. These are all signs that roof damage is present.

  • Check your yard: Pieces of shingle or flashing can often be torn from your roof during a storm. Typically these are from areas of the roof that were weakened or previously damaged. If you do notice some roof debris after a storm, it is a good idea to take a closer look, or have your roof inspected by a local, trusted roofing company.

  • Check where your roof meets other areas of your home: Any place that your roof connects to walls or other parts of your home to make a seam can be vulnerable to storm damage. Inspect the condition of your exhaust pipes, valleys, edges and other structurally adjacent angles.

  • Identifying hail damage: If one of these summer storms brings hail with it, it’s important to know what hail damage looks like. It typically looks like dimples. These can be seen on the surface of your shingles as well as siding.

While these rounds of rain and thunderstorms seem like they’ll never end, it’s important to make sure your roof is healthy enough to protect your home.
