With a combination of strong downpours, severe thunderstorms and constant rain, your gutters are constantly put to the test. If you cleaned them at the beginning of the season, it may not be a bad idea to take a look and see what 8 or so consecutive days of rain brought. However, if you haven’t gotten around to cleaning those gutters, now is definitely the time.

Not only is it important to keep your home safe and sound by keeping your gutters and drainage system clean, it is very important you do it safely. Anytime you climb a ladder or put yourself in an unfamiliar or uncomfortable position, safety should be the first priority. So here are 3 easy tips to ensure you clean your gutters safely.

Wear Hand and Eye Protection When Cleaning Gutters

There can be rough edges, jagged screws or sharp debris in and around your gutters. Wearing heavy duty gloves can protect your hands. As you clean out the gutter it can be very easy for loose debris to harm your eyes. Safety goggles or glasses should be worn while you’re on the roof.

Use Caution on Ladders When Accessing Your Roof

Anytime you climb a ladder you should be very safety conscious. Inspect your ladder and make sure it is on a stable base. You should also have someone hold the ladder while you climb and stand.

Wear Rubber Soled Shoes On Your Roof

Of course any time after it rains things are going to be wet and slippery. The rungs of a your ladder as well as your roof and gutter are no exception. Having a pair of shoes with a rubber sole and good grip is essential to keep you safe.

These are just a few friendly reminders when it comes to keeping your gutters and yourself safe. While you’re up there take a look at the condition of your roof as well as the gutters. If you notice some potential problem areas, or something you’re not comfortable seeing to yourself, call the local roofers that Baton Rouge has trusted for over 50 years, Cribbs Incorporated.
