Home and Roofing Tips: Keeping Your Baton Rouge Energy Bill Low

Robbie Chatelain • June 24, 2015

The air conditioner in the backyard runs so often you don’t even notice the loud hum anymore. One thing you do notice is the pain in your wallet each month when your energy bill arrives. By following a few of these easy, helpful tips, your yard can be a little quieter and your checkbook can be a little fatter.

  • Keep Electronics Turned Off: Your TV, computer, game systems, etc. all put off heat that will warm up your home. So when not in use, power these devices down to keep the temperature down.

  • Use “Cool” Lightbulbs: Replacing your incandescent light bulbs with high efficiency, low-heat bulbs can not only trim your power bill, but cool your home.

  • Keep Blinds and Curtains Closed: These window treatments are designed to reduce sunlight and heat.

  • Use Ceiling Fans: A ceiling fan uses much less energy than your air conditioner. So it can either work in place of, or move the cooler air around, making your a/c much more effective.

  • Clean/Replace Air Conditioning Filters-As the a/c continues to run, your filters will get dirty faster. With a clean filter it won’t have to work as hard and will use less energy.

  • Check Your Roof: One of the biggest sources of heat penetration and energy loss can come from your roof. First inspect outside, any loose shingles or problem areas? Those need to be fixed. Next inspect your attic, can you see any light or feel any heat penetrating? How’s the insulation? All of these can be addressed and dramatically improve your home’s efficiency.

These are only a handful of tips. Your roof plays a large role in your home’s efficiency, but taking care of some other simple elements can make a big difference.
