Attic Insulation can Extend the Life of Your Roof

Whether your attic provides your home with an extra bedroom, storage unit, or frightening mystery space, it is important that it is properly insulated. Although not all homeowners are readily in-touch with the conditions of their attic, it is important to note that poor insulation could be the root of various other problems within your home. Just as insurance is a critical component of home buying, it is time we begin thinking of attic insulation the same way!

Attic Insulation and Ice Dams

With vast weather changes and various parts of the country experiencing record temperatures (both low and high), many homes risk the loss of their structural integrity. Homes up North (and sometimes South) can experience damage from excessive ice dam formation. While these formations may mark the change of seasons for some, they have the potential to cause extensive roof damage. Ice dams are formed by rising heat from the inside of the home. The warming of the attic causes snow on the roof to melt, some of which will cause condensation in the attic, and some form ice dams on the side of the home. So next time you are admiring those long icicles on the side of your house, be sure to add an attic inspection to your to do list!

Attic Insulation and Condensation

Condensation in the attic can be disastrous for the structural integrity of your home or business. Rust forms on metal with the presence of constant moisture. This leaves the nails and bolts holding your home together at risk for decay. Constant moisture will also negatively impact the wooden frame of the roof. As beams sit soaking in moisture day in and day out, mold forms, and eventually the beams will begin to rot. With proper insulation, these worrisome problems can be avoided. Insulation can eliminate the risk of roofing decay and in turn, extend the life of your roof. But, the benefits do not stop there.

Attic Insulation and Cost Savings

As you flip your AC unit from cool to heat (or vice versa), energy bills can become as frightening as that abandoned attic! A home that lacks proper insulation is more likely to experience higher energy bills . This is due to the inability for your home to keep the cool air in and the hot air out (and vice versa). This inability causes uneven temperatures throughout the home, drafty rooms, and cold/hot ceilings and walls. By maintaining proper insulation of your attic, you give your HVAC system a break from working over time to stabilize the temperature in your home. And, a break for the system means a break for your wallet!

Building a home with proper attic insulation is a sure way to avoid bothersome roofing problems down the road! The insulation of your home carries so much weight on not only your pocket book, but also on your comfort and safety in your home or business.
