While the winters in are Baton Rouge tame compared to other parts of the country, we still experience freezes, cold snaps, wind and rain that are quite different from our warmer months. However, in spite of how brief or mild our winters may be, they can still pose some challenges to our infrastructure, specifically our roofs. With that being said, here are a few things can ease those “winter woes” and keep your commercial building’s roof performing well for years.

  • Clear debris from the roof: Our late and short winters also mean that the trees are a bit tardy when it comes to time shed their leaves. These leaves and other debris can create problems for your roof any time during the year, but there tends be more when the seasons change. This debris can trap water, creating ponds and eventually leaks.

  • Check attic insulation: This is a great idea any time of the year. Adequate insulation in your attic can prevent warm air from escaping in the winter and cool air from escaping during the summer, benefitting your energy bill . While you address the insulation in the attic you’ll also have a chance to look for any other damage.

  • Trim trees near the building: Not only will this reduce the amount of debris that ends up on your roof, it can also prevent other damage as well. Scratches, storm damage and other structural issues can occur if trees or other landscaping are growing too close to the roof.

  • Clean gutters: Just like the debris on your roof, your gutters will quickly fill with leaves and sticks. If the gutters are clogged, water will be forced over the edges or back up on the roof. If the water can’t be channeled from the roof and away from the building it can create serious roof and foundation problems.

These are only a few commercial roofing tips, but taking care of these can leave you with one less thing to think about this winter.
