Baton Rouge Commercial Roofing: Metal Roof BenefitsWhen it comes to running your business there are a lot of overhead costs.  One of the biggest costs, at least initially can be your offices, facilities and other properties necessary to run your operation.  While we’re discussing these specific costs, none is literally more “overhead” than your commercial building’s roof.  Of course as your business grows there will be maintenance costs and updates and changes that need to be made, what if you could avoid some of these expenses simply by the type of roof that you choose?

Just like with your home, there are a variety of options you’ll have to choose from when you either build your commercial structure in or around Baton Rouge or replace your existing roof.  If you are looking for something that will do exactly what it’s supposed to, protect the building and provide little in the way of maintenance, a metal roof is exactly what you need.  Here are a few reasons why:

  • Durability / Lifespan: The weather in south Louisiana can really take a toll on the exterior of your building.  From violent thunderstorms and hurricanes to high winds and frigid, icy winters as well as hailstorms and lightning, your roof can really take a beating and age long before its time.  A metal roof however withstands the elements very well.  The average lifespan for a sheet metal roof can span several decades.  With a variety of coating options available, the look and dexterity can be customized to fit your needs.

  • Low Maintenance: Keeping costs low is a primary concern for business owners everywhere.  Facility and infrastructure maintenance can be a large source of expenses.  With little maintenance required to maintain the appearances and integrity of a metal roof, the cost effectiveness becomes a real advantage.

  • Sustainability / Green: Having green initiatives are not only good for the environment but are another great way to run a more efficient operation.  Many metal roofs are derived from recycled materials, so that can entice your Earth friendly conscious.  There are also coatings available that help reflect sunlight in the summer keeping your commercial building cooler, and absorb it in the winter keeping your utility bills lower.

While the type of roof you choose for your commercial building is only one of many decisions that need to made, it can help with a lot of other directly and indirectly related issues down the road.  Cribbs Incorporated has been the premier roofing and sheet metal source in Baton Rouge for over 50 years.  For more information, click here.

Baton Rouge Commercial Roofing: Metal Roof Tips

Posted by Robbie Chatelain on Mon, Nov 24, 2014 @ 11:29 AM

Baton Rouge Commercial Roofing: Metal Roof TipsDepending on the type of business you own, your offices and infrastructure can be made of a variety of materials.  The one thing they all have in common is they all have a roof.  Depending on the type of roof, there are different ways you can maintain it.  Here are 3 tips that can keep your Baton Rouge area business’ metal roof in great condition.

1.)    Clear debris:  The metal roof that protects your business can be a magnet for a variety of debris.  From leaves and sticks to other windblown objects, this can become a burden to your roof.  The shape and design of your roof plays a large role in how well debris will or won’t settle, but not only does it create extra stress on the structure, it can create drainage issues.

2.)    Clean gutters:  Speaking of drainage issues, having clear gutters and paths to channel water off of your roof and away from the building is important to your entire structure.  Keeping water from collecting on the roof will prevent leaks and having it taken away from the building can prevent foundation problems as well.

3.)    Keep trees and other obstacles away:  Constant contact from tree limbs or the threat of a pole or post impacting the roof can create serious issues.  The constant abrasion from branches and other brush can damage the finish of the metal and compromise its effectiveness.  Keeping trees trimmed and keeping these scenarios in mind as you implement new things around the building can keep your roof healthy for years.

While there are a lot of benefits of having a metal roof for your business, there are also some different things to consider.  Cribbs Incorporated has been installing, maintaining and caring for roofs of all kinds for homes and business of over 50 years.  For more information, click here.

Baton Rouge Metal Roofing Materials: Building a Roof

Posted by Robbie Chatelain on Wed, Jun 11, 2014 @ 09:54 AM

Baton Rouge Metal Roofing Materials: Building a RoofJust like kitchens and countertops and living rooms and flooring, your roof has a variety of material options.  Each type of material offers different advantages and features.  Inside each category of roof materials, you’ll have several more decisions to make.  It’s not as simple as choosing: shingles, slate, tile or metal.  You’ll need to decide what composition of shingle, clay or concrete tile, colors, coating, so on and so forth.

Well, if you’re choosing metal, you’re probably doing so for a couple of key reasons.  Metal withstands the elements very well.  It doesn’t corrode or mildew.  Metal roofs also have the potential to last a lifetime.  But before you commit to a metal roof for your Baton Rouge home, just like with anything else, it’s important to know how it’s built.

1.)    Measure the area of your roof:  It sounds simple, but knowing the size of your roof is crucial when it comes to ordering the materials and preparing your home.  In addition to the area, you also need to calculate the slope, or rise over run of your roof.  It is a good idea when ordering materials based on these measurements to allow for a 10% waste.

2.)    Prepare the site:  Having the essentials on hand to organize and assemble your roof will be key.  A large trash can, a staging area for tools, as well as your ladders are all things you’ll to help you smoothly install your roof.  For safety, organize any extension cords and keep your materials in an area that is safe from the weather.

3.)    Remove the existing roof:  While metal roofing can be installed over existing shingles, it is ideal to remove them and start with a fresh base.  Starting at the highest point of your roof and remove all shingles, vents and flashing.  This is also a good opportunity to make any adjustments to your gutter system or other permanent elements.

4.)    Repair any damage:  While you’re on top of your house, and literally under your roof, this is a great chance to take care of any damage you may find.  Any ventilation, insulation or frame maintenance that needs to be tended should be done now.

5.)    Install insulation: This thin layer of roofing felt will prevent moisture from being trapped between the structure and the roof.

6.)    Start by installing the edging: Also called the “eave flashing”, these metal strips are used to cover the perimeter of your home’s roof.

7.)    Add the metal panels: Beginning at the longest peak to eave point on your roof, take a piece of metal and position it so it hangs ¾ of an inch over the edge of the roof.  Be sure that it is square to the edge of the roof.  When screwing this panel to the roof, be sure the screws are aligned evenly.

8.)    Flashing: These metal trim pieces will be placed in certain places of your roof, like valleys and end caps.  These pieces can be manipulated and positioned as they need to be to fit the roof.

And that, simply speaking, is the process from A-Z for installing a new metal roof on your Baton Rouge home.  For the supplies, or the experts to make that replacement for you, trust Cribbs Incorporated.  For over 50 years Cribbs has been helping homeowners and improving houses and businesses in the Baton Rouge area.  For more information, click here.

The Lifespan of a Metal Roof in Baton Rouge

Posted by Robbie Chatelain on Thu, May 15, 2014 @ 11:16 AM

The Lifespan of a Metal Roof in Baton RougeWhen it comes to considering a new roof for your Baton Rouge home there a lot of things to keep in mind.  The first thing that may come to your mind is, “I never want to do this again”.  If this is the case, a metal roof may meet that desire.

That isn’t to say that a slate, tile or shingled roof will need constant attention, repair or replacement, however, on average, a metal roof will last two to three times longer than a shingled roof.  Well how long is two to three times?  An asphalt shingle can last anywhere from 12 to 20 years, or longer depending on conditions and care.  Therefore, your metal roof could last close to 60 years or longer.  It’s not uncommon to find a 50, 60, 70 year old home with its original roof.

The advantages that lead a metal roof to such longevity are simple.  A metal roof is will never decompose.  If cared for correctly, cleared of debris and examined or inspected seasonally, it can last as long if not longer than your home

At Cribbs Inc., we’ve been installing and caring for metal roofs in the Baton Rouge area for over 50 years.  If your roof needs to be replaced and you’re considering a metal roof, or need materials for your metal roof, click here.

The Advantages of a Baton Rouge Metal Roof

Posted by Robbie Chatelain on Tue, Feb 18, 2014 @ 09:08 AM

The Advantages of a Baton Rouge Metal RoofThe architecture of our great part of the country lends itself to a variety of roofing options.  From traditional wooden shingles, asphalt shingles, tile and metal, depending on your personal preference, there is an option that will work well for your home.  While your own taste and desire for curb appeal will play the initial role in selecting a roofing material, there are many different benefits to different types of roofs.  Let’s take a look some of the advantages a metal roof can add to your Baton Rouge home.

  • Longevity:  Metal is a highly durable material.  It can withstand extensive exposure to the variety of elements it will face in south Louisiana.  It is not uncommon for a metal roof to last for over 50 years.

  • Weather resistant:  Again, lending to its longevity, metal roofs hold up exceptionally well to all types of weather.  Winds, hail, snow, sleet and rain will leave little to no impact on a quality metal roof.  There is no need to worry about mold or any other natural element affecting your roof in our humid climate.  Metal roofs are also ideal for reflecting sun and heat away from your home.  This is a very helpful feature when you consider your air conditioning bill in our hot summers.

  • Minimum maintenance:  Once your metal roof is installed, it is essentially good to go through its lifetime.  These materials won’t lose their shape or integrity.

  • Fire resistant-  Metals won’t burn, so the risk of fire damage from lightning or other elements on or around your roof are greatly diminished.

These are only a handful of the benefits you can enjoy from a quality metal roof for your Baton Rouge home.  It’s important to consider how each type of roofing material will enhance your home when it is time to replace your roof.  At Cribbs Incorporated, we’ve been caring for Baton Rouge homes and roofs for over 50 years.  We specialize in sheet metal as well as all other aspects of roofing.
