3 Things to Look for in a Metal Roof for Your Baton Rouge Home

3 things to look for in a metal roof for your baton rouge homeGood things come in threes.  A fieldgoal in football, a birdie on a par 4, Back to the Future.  The same is true when you consider a metal roof for your home.  It’s important to trust your home’s biggest asset to a quality, proven Baton Rouge roofing company and supplier.  Just like the three musketeers, Three’s Company reruns and the three little pigs, here are three things to look for in a metal roof for your south Louisiana home.

  • Special Flashings- For most homes, installing a metal roof is going to create certain areas that will need special care.  To protect your home and create the most value in your new roof, sealants can’t be used.  To account for sky lights, chimneys, valleys or gables, you’ll need to implement special flashings.  A Baton Rouge roofing and sheet metal supplier will be able to provide these.
  • Self-Cleaning Valleys- Between pine trees, oak trees and cypress trees, there is plenty of debris that will end up on your roof.  It’s important that your new roof is equipped with open valleys that allow your roof to stay clean.  Many roofs are installed with a closed valley system.  It has hidden waterways that are easily clogged with debris.  These clogs from leaves, needles and sticks trap the water there and can eventually cause leaks.  Open or “self-cleaning” valleys carry rainwater and any roof debris off of the roof so clogs and leaks can be avoided.
  • Ventilation- This is a magical word in south Louisiana.  The sweltering summer heat and high humidity from March through October can be unbearable.  It also does a number to your energy bills during the peak of summer.  Reroofing your home provides a great opportunity to address your attic ventilation.  Most homes benefit from increased ventilation between your attic and your roof.  This extra room keeps your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

So there you have it.  There are many benefits to providing a metal roof for your home or business.  Just like a three of a kind in poker or the third time’s the charm, these three elements of a Baton Rouge metal roof will make it even better.

5 Myths About Metal Roofing in Baton Rouge

shutterstock 139435205 resized 600You may have considered a metal roof for your home at one time or another.  If so, you probably thought about at least one of these five common metal roof stereotypes.  Well let’s address those concerns and discover what’s true and what’s false.

1.)    No Resale Value:  Quite the opposite is true here.  A quality metal roof will add to the value of your home.  It’s not uncommon for a metal roof to fetch more than half of the initial cost at selling time.  Considering a homeowner’s penchant for keeping maintenance at a minimum, a home with a roof that will never need to be replaced will be very appealing.

2.)    Louisiana Thunderstorms are going to be noisy:  The only way pounding rain drops will make a racket is if you have sheets of metal over open rafters.  This makes the metal reverberate.  However, today’s methods have the metal shingles and material fastened directly to the existing wooden roof deck.  This keeps the roof quiet.

3.)    It Will Make My Home Warmer:  Again, the opposite is typically more accurate.  A metal roof can significantly reduce the temperature of your home.  Aluminum roofs are the most energy efficient.  They can reduce the amount of heat entering your home by up to 34%.  Metal roofs are ideal for keeping your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

4.)    Lightning Strikes:  Metal does conduct electricity, however, it does not attract it. In fact metal is not a combustible material so, in a thunderstorm, it can be safer than a wooden roof.

5.)    It Can’t Be Walked On:  This could be an issue for a number of reasons; home maintenance, chimney maintenance, tree trimming, etc.  However, when done correctly, you can access your metal roof without damaging it just as you would a traditional wooden roof.  Consult the manufacturer and/or installer for the proper protocol.

With these common concerns put to bed, and perhaps  some new benefits unveiled, the value and superiority of metal roofs is evident.  At Cribb’s Incorported we have been the Baton Rouge area’s source for residential and commercial roofing and sheet metal needs for over 50 years.

metal roofing baton rougeSo, you are building your dream home in Baton Rouge, should you use a metal roof? Or perhaps your want to spruce up your old home, should you use shingles? The roof is one of the most important parts of a house, and it is vital to only hire a professional roofing contractor for this service. Don't forget that a beautiful, sound-looking roof is also part of the curb appeal of your home

There are several different types of roofs, and a lot of factors to consider when getting a new roof installed. Here are some of the different types of roofs :

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing now comes in a lot of different styles and colors. It comes in the shape of shingles, and also has styles that look like barrel clay tiles. You can even buy metal shingles with the look and texture of shake wood shingles. One of the main benefits of metal roofing is that it can last for a very long time without leaks or deterioration. Some styles of metal roofs can last for 50 years. It also requires little maintenance, and looks new for a long time. In a climate zone that has hot and humid summers like Baton Rouge, metal roofs will reflect the heat away, serving to keep the attic area cooler in summer.

Metal roofing  requires the services of a reputable roofing contractor to install. It is definitely not a project for the homeowner to do. The installation of a metal roof costs more than other roof types, and the materials involved also cost more. But, it is a case of "you get what you pay for ", because a metal roof is built to last.

Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Asphalt Shingle roofs are very common. Asphalt shingles are probably the way to go if you are on a tight budget. Both installation and materials are inexpensive when compared to other types of roof.

A drawback to using asphalt shingles for your roof is that the shingles absorb a lot of the sun's heat in summer, causing the attic of the house to become very hot. Another factor to consider is that asphalt shingles will sometimes come loose,or even be blown off the roof in a weather event involving high winds.

Clay barrel tile roofs

Clay barrel tiles are beautiful for the roof of your Spanish or Mediterranean style house. The only drawback is that clay barrel tile roofs will sometimes leak if they are not installed by a professional roof contractor. However, clay tile roofs, like metal roofs, will usually stay put in high winds. Clay tile roofs are more expensive regarding both materials and installation than asphalt tile roofs.

These are a few of the most common types of roofs here in the Baton Rouge area. Cribb's is here to help with all of your roofing needs. Whether it be a minor repair or a full on replace. After all, you and your family deserve to enjoy your deam home.
