Wood shake
and wood shingle roofs are primarily used in residential
applications on steep sloped roof areas, and are usually
more common in dryer milder climate.
Wood shakes and shingles are made from
either cedar or pine. Cedar shakes and shingles
are made from Western Red Cedar and are available
pressure treated with fire retardants and chemical
preservatives as well as untreated. Pine shakes
and shingles are made from Southern Yellow Pine and are
only available treated. The treatment helps to
protect the wood from fire, decay and insects.
Wood shakes are split from logs and
reshaped by the manufacturer. They are thicker at
the butt end than shingles and generally one or both
sides are split in order to obtain a textured effect.
