Inspecting Your Baton Rouge Roof for Hail Damage

Robbie Chatelain • Mar 07, 2014

Some recent storms in our area have brought more than just rain. Hail can not only put a dent in your roof, but also your wallet. If your Baton Rouge home was in line of these storms it’s a good idea to take a look and see if any damage was done. This can be done without climbing atop your roof, you can do it from the comfort of your yard with a pair of binoculars. Checking now for damage can reduce potential headaches and costs down the road. As we head into the spring and summer months where these types of storms are more frequent, it’s wise to address these issues now. Here are a few things to look for to determine if your roof has sustained any hail damage:

  • Broken and/or missing shingles : You should be able to identify this from the ground. Look around your roof and keep an eye out for shingles that aren’t where they should be. Do they look loose? Do you see splintered edges or pieces of shingle in certain areas of your roof? If you do, it may be time to take a closer look. Contact a trusted, local Baton Rouge roofing company.

  • Look for missing granules: The granules on your roof’s shingles protect the underlying material from UV rays. These granules can be forced off or washed away by heavy rains, debris and hail. Not only does the absence of these granules signify damage, it also speeds up the aging process of your roof as it is now vulnerable to the sun’s rays. You may notice granules in your grass, landscaping, driveway, patio and gutters if they’ve been damaged.

  • Look around your home: If you’ve notice limbs and leaves on the ground or other damage to your landscaping, or dents in your car, that could be a tell-tale sign that a significant storm has impacted your home. The fact that your roof has such a large surface area only increases its susceptibility to the damage a hail storm can produce.

Unfortunately when a hail storm comes through our area in south Louisiana it could have some consequences for our roofs. However addressing them afterward can be key in avoiding expensive repairs and possibly roof replacements. If left unattended the condition of your roof could rapidly deteriorate, leaks could develop and further damage to your property is possible. If you suspect or see any of these signs, contact Cribbs Incorporated . Cribbs has been repairing and caring for Baton Rouge area roofs for over 50 years .
